Area 2 Inshore Finfish Management Company Ltd (Area 2)

Until recently, the Area 2 Inshore Finfish Management Company Ltd has been the Commercial Stakeholder Organisation responsible for operational management of finfish stocks in Fisheries Management Area 2-the area generally between East Cape on the east coast of the North Island and Kapiti Island on the west coast.

In 2016, the Board of Area 2 agreed that Fisheries Inshore New Zealand would represent the interests of fishers, licensed fish receivers and quota owners that are involved in Area 2 fisheries. The former Area 2 Board now acts as a Regional Committee of Fisheries Inshore New Zealand and retains responsibility for research and monitoring of Area 2 stocks, and has the mandate to provide Fisheries Inshore New Zealand's views about operational matters such as catch limits and deemed values.

A Memorandum of Understanding guides the relationship between Fisheries Inshore New Zealand and the Area 2 Committee.

Current work being conducted in the 2016/17 year includes research to support the management of gurnard, flatfish and moki stocks (GUR2, FLA2 and MOK1).

Proactive initiatives

The commercial sector has been working with MPI and recreational fishers in Hawke Bay to improve fisheries resources for all. After a series of discussions, a range of initiatives have been trialled over the 2015/16 and 2016/17 summers.

A package of measures was agreed that included:

  • reducing or eliminating commercial fishing effort in key areas important to the recreational sector;
  • formalising existing trials of trawl technology to reduce the catch of juvenile fish;
  • increasing monitoring and data collection through the use of vessel monitoring.

These discussions have now expanded to include the Department of Conservation, Iwi representatives, and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. This expansion provides the opportunity to address a range of marine and terrestrial issues that impact on the marine environment.

Further details on the summer closures for recreational fishers and gear trials are available here.
