Jack Mackerel 1
Jack Mackerel stocks in New Zealand are comprised of three different but closely-related species.
New Zealand is a founding member of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRMO) which requires Jack Mackerel catch estimates to be reported by individual species. This obligation requires a sampling programme to determine the composition of Jack Mackerel catches.
In 2013, the Ministry for Primary Industries invited Jack Mackerel 1 quota owners to undertake the New Zealand catch sampling programme and Fisheries Inshore New Zealand has been contracting that work since.
This work has been peer reviewed and accepted by the Ministry’s Northern Inshore Science Working Group.
